Encore On Strings

Encore on Strings was created by Mark Gibson together with expert string teachers Keith and Natalie Sharp. As part of the SMART system it includes many of the essential features of Encore on Keys, making Encore on Strings a unique string publication.

Music Maestros

  • Age range: beginner students aged 7 to 12 years
  • Course duration: 2 Books/Levels
  • Student materials: Book and CD
  • Teacher materials: Ensemble and Accompaniment Books

Music Maestros is a series specially designed to meet the needs of beginner string students. The series is available for violin, viola, cello and double bass. It is ideal for both private and group tuition.

Like Encore on Keys, this teaching method encourages a holistic approach to music learning. Students meet and play their instrument right from the start, are aurally stimulated by the high-quality audio recordings, and are assisted in learning their instrument by visual Finger Maps. A variety of styles are included in the repertoire, allowing students to enjoy a broader music learning experience. Contemporary and traditional styles are authentically recreated so that even when learning the simplest of pieces, students are exposed to multiple musical layers consisting of rhythm, melody, harmony and timbre. Styles include Best of Baroque, Samba Down and Lightly Rock.

Each piece features a particular teaching point such as introducing a new note, a new skill or perhaps reinforcing previous elements within a new context. To assist both the teacher and the student, the main teaching point relevant to each piece appears underneath its title. Other teaching points become self evident as the pieces become more familiar. By the end of Level 2, students will be able to play in the keys of A Major, D Major, C Major, and G Major.

Included in each Level are:

  • Repertoire Pieces – solo performance pieces
  • Fiddle Zips – small pieces that develop playing skills on a micro level and
  • Finger Maps – visual models of finger patterns.

Level 2 also includes:

  • Ensemble Options
  • Scales and
  • Daily Warm-Ups.

These features are presented as an integrated teaching sequence and are designed to provide a thorough and balanced approach to music education.

Comprehensive ensemble and accompaniment books are also available. Teachers can play their string instrument in a duet with the student, or can accompany the student on the piano.
